It seems the OS was using an old and very approximate reading - perhaps as it was unable to read battery level after battery level dropped (just guessing here). But the indication there was 50% - not 0% - upon checking. At that time, I check in Windows / Settings / Bluetooth. My MX Keys (running on Windows 10) gives no indication (by light, or by on-screen alert) before stopping functioning when battery dies. Battery status indicators are hard to access and also unreliable.
